Esther Adolfine Freud (1914-1943) was the fifth daughter of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and his wife Martha Bernays. She was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, and was the niece of the famous psychoanalyst Anna Freud.
Esther was a talented artist and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She also worked as an office assistant and a teacher of English and French at a school for girls.
As a Jew living in Austria during World War II, Esther was persecuted by the Nazis and forced to leave her home. She emigrated to England in 1938 and tried to continue her career as an artist, but her work was not well received. She also struggled with depression and other mental health issues.
In 1943, Esther died by suicide, at the age of 29. She is buried in Golders Green Jewish cemetery in London.
Esther's life has inspired numerous books and films, including the novel "Esther's Inheritance" by Sandor Scheiber and the documentary film "The Restless Conscience" by Hava Kohav Beller.
